British-Russian Young Lawyers’ Exchange Scheme

Opportunity for young Russian advocates to gain international experience in London

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Justice of the United Kingdom, a young lawyer exchange scheme has just been launched, operated by the Federal Chamber of Advocates, the Bar Council of England and Wales and the Law Society of England and Wales.

This is an outstanding opportunity for young advocates seeking to develop an international career, to spend 6 weeks in legal London and gain experience of important aspects of international legal work.

The programme will consist of a 2 day induction programme, which will familiarise participants with the English legal system and key concepts of English law, followed by two placements of 3 weeks each with a leading solicitors’ firm and a barristers’ chambers.

During the placements participants will learn

-    how international disputes are resolved under English law
-    how the courts operate (including attendance at hearings)
-    how a law firm is managed
-    how the English legal profession works and how it is regulated

Throughout the placements, the hosts will organise in-house seminars which will focus on practical aspects of lawyering, such as advocacy skills, practice management, client care, etc.. The programme will also contain social elements (such as a welcome and closing reception, lunches in the Inns of Court) which will enable participants to widen their professional networks.

Each participant will have two mentors assigned to them, for the chambers and law firm placement, a relationship that will hopefully be continued beyond the end of the programme.
